Tokonoma is made of solid oak ebonised by an oxidation reduction reaction of Iron(Fe) and the natural tannin found in timber. The contrasting surface treatments: opulent and poor, smooth and rough, shinny and dull, etc… evoke a sense of both refinement and poverty
