Studio Chen Lu explores the art of concealment. In this Surry Hills residence, a decorative screen rendered in soft, ink-wash pine conceals a fully functioning kitchen behind its panels. A single pivot, and the screen gives way: grey stone, charcoal cabinetry, a monolithic island anchoring the space. Set against the lightness of the spiral stair and the painterly surface of the screens, it arrives as a quiet counterpoint.
The ritual of daily use becomes part of the experience: opening, transforming, returning. Concealment here is not about hiding function. It is about offering a space its clarity, and room to breathe. A gallery-like living room. A working kitchen when needed.
